Boost the ‘Boro $2,500 recipient of Monsanto grant
04-05-2011, Bladenboro Historical Society, Bladenboro, North Carolina
Thanks to Bladenboro farmer Joyce Walters and the “America’s Farmers Grow Communities Project,” Boost the ‘Boro, Incorporated was presented a check for $2,500 during a special ceremony on Monday night.
Tally McCall was on hand to present the donation on behalf of the Monsanto Corporation, which sponsors the awards. The program supports farming communities by offering farmers the opportunity to win the grant for their favorite community charity.
Mrs. Walters is a tireless volunteer for Boost the ‘Boro, a grassroots initiative to bring about economic growth, pride and prosperity to the
Bladenboro community. (The non-profit is best known for its annual Beast of Bladenboro festival.)
Mrs. Walters commented in her acceptance speech, “Although Monsanto is a corporate giant doing business on a global scale, they have not forgotten the farming communities across America.”
Due to its success, the program has expanded nationally to 38 states and 1,201 counties.
Boost the ‘Boro plans to use the money to improve a downtown “green spot” with picnic tables and a flagpole. According to outgoing
president Berry Lewis, “we just want to offer citizens a place to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch.”
As mentioned, Joyce is a tireless volunteer for Boost the ‘Boro; however, her volunteer work goes on in other organizations, including Galeed Baptist Church near Bladenboro.
Whenever you can, share your appreciation to Joyce Walters and your local Monsanto representative. †
