How It Was—My Days in the ‘Boro’

Even at my age I can remember lots of stuff that Bladenboro had to offer. But most of it has made way for a better way of life, as some might say.

I can remember the old Spinner’s Court ballpark before the apartments came to be. The ball field was in bad shape but still it was there. Some of the field behind the old cotton mill was still accessible but most had grown up with weeds and trees.

Wateree Park was in a lot better shape back then and if updated, kids would have a place to play.

I remember Jones Dime Store, Fisher’s Men’s Store, Western Auto, Doug’s Video Store, all a part of our past now.

When I was old enough to earn my own money I purchased my own CB radio. I used a CB name (handle), the “Beast of Bladenboro” which I still use today but with some minor changes. Now it’s “Carolina Beast” so if you’re ever on the CB on channel 17 or 22 ask 99 if the beast is around.

I also remember going to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades in the old schoolhouse which now houses the Bladenboro Historical Society. I guess that makes me a part of Bladenboro’s history—old enough to have my heart, mind and childhood in “the Boro”.
